Weekly News January 12, 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Good Gracious it has been a cold week! It appears that our mild winter is behind us and now we are trudging forward through the chill. As shared by the system messaging sent to parents this week, please note that it is quite rare for CBE schools to close due to weather. If this occurs, messaging will be sent out by the school through messenger, social media, and other platforms to ensure the message is received by parents.
Informational Items:
Dressing for the Weather
With this week being as cold as it was, we had numerous days in which students did not go outside. This is called a “Blue Day”, and signs are placed on doors so that parents and students know that the doors are unlocked, and they can come straight into the school. When the temperature reaches –20C or more, including wind chill, students do not go outside.
Aside from “Blue Days” MVS students are fortunate to go outside every day for recess and over the lunch hour. Please ensure that students are dressed for the weather with a warm jacket, mitts, toque and snowpants.
Students are not permitted to wear their snow boots, snow pants or jackets while in their classrooms. We have noticed a rise in the wearing of both items throughout the week and we would appreciate if you would have a conversation with your student(s) about changing into their indoor shoes and remove snow gear when they come in in the morning and after both recesses. Thank you for your support.
Decodable Books
The link below is a resource to assist in the building of decodable reading skills. It is a decodable digital library with numerous resources, background information and books for kids to read!

Safety
When dropping your student off, and picking them up, please use the crosswalk. We cannot ensure the safety of everyone when people are jaywalking to get to school. The area in front of the school is very busy and proper use of the crosswalk, ensures that all pedestrians are visible.
Please also do not cut through the parking lot at any time. This is also a busy space with cars backing up and limited space to do so. Drivers do not expect to have pedestrians crossing through this area and this poses a safety risk. Please ensure you are always walking around the perimeter of the school and not through the parking lot.

School Council and Home and School Association
Last school year, individuals generously donated $665 to fund the purchase of Healthy Hunger fun lunches for a few children each month. This approach was reviewed at the October 17, 2023 MVHSA meeting, and for multiple reasons the school proposed that a more effective use of the remaining funds would be to purchase a supply of healthy snacks each month that can be accessed any day, by any student, as needed. If there are objections to this revised approach, please contact Tejinder or Allyson, or email MVHSAssociation@gmail.com. If you would like to donate to support the fund please send an email transfer to MVHSAssociation@gmail.com with “healthy snacks” in the notes.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Tejinder and Allyson
